More about “This Was Water” art installation:
“This Was Water” is a mesmerizing multimedia sculpture and sound installation debuting at the Dumke Arts Plaza on May 13, 2025. Created by Kellie Bornhoft, the installation is inspired by the Great Salt Lake and its fragile ecosystem.
The artwork features five rock mounds, each about 8 feet by 10 feet by 8 feet, with fabricated crystals emerging from them, glowing with lights. Embedded speakers play a generative composition by Carey Campbell, and lidar sensors adjust the sound and lighting based on a person’s proximity.
The installation is deeply symbolic—Bornhoft and Campbell imagine the crystals as vestiges of the drying lake, reflecting both its beauty and the environmental concerns surrounding its decline. The crystals, known as “dirty diamonds,” form rapidly in the lakebed, capturing clay and tar, making them appear muddied.
As visitors move through the space, their experience transforms, creating an interactive and immersive encounter with the art work. The installation invites reflection on our relationship with the Great Salt Lake and the urgent need for conservation.
